Afro Hair Transplant in Turkey: What to Ask About Curly Hair Extraction

If you have afro-textured hair, most hair transplant advice was not written with you in mind. Tightly curled hair grows from curved follicles, and that changes how the grafts have to be extracted. A clinic that treats every head the same way is the clinic to avoid. Here is what the published research says, the questions that follow from it, and how we approach it at Global Health Hair.

Quick summary: A published case series found that FUE with conventional rotary punches frequently produced unacceptably high transection (cutting) rates in tightly curled afro-textured hair, and that a curved non-rotary punch did better. The study was small, so it is a reason to ask questions, not a verdict. At Global Health Hair, Dr. Merdan Çelik, MD personally performs the incisions, the extraction and the implantation, and treats patients with afro-textured hair. Send photographs on WhatsApp for a personal reply with no obligation.

Why Is Afro-Textured Hair Different for a Transplant?

In FUE, each graft is extracted individually with a small punch. Straight follicles run in a predictable line below the skin. Tightly curled follicles curve beneath the surface, which makes them easier to cut during extraction. A cut follicle is lost. A comparative study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open reported that FUE with conventional rotary punches frequently leads to unacceptably high transection rates in patients with tightly curled afro-textured hair.

What Did the Study Find, and What Are Its Limits?

In a case series of 18 patients with tightly curled hair, researchers tried three types of punch in turn. A two-pronged curved non-rotary punch had the best transection rate, below 5 percent, whereas sharp and dull rotary punches had excessive transection rates or failed completely in 8 patients. The authors are explicit about the limits: it was a small, retrospective case series, and the technique may need extra training for surgeons. Treat it as evidence that the extraction method matters for curly hair, not as proof that one device is right for every patient.

Which Questions Should You Ask Any Clinic?

  1. Have you treated patients with afro-textured hair, and who will operate on me?
  2. How do you extract grafts from curved follicles, and what do you do to limit transection?
  3. Can I see photographs of patients with a similar hair type, taken at 12 months?
  4. What is your honest view of my donor area and my goals?
  5. What does the price include, and does it change with the number of grafts?
  6. How long is follow-up, and who answers my questions after I go home?

What About Scarring and Healing?

Ask about scarring openly. If you have ever had raised scars, known as keloids, after a cut or an injury, tell the clinic before any procedure. We do not diagnose, and your own doctor is the right person to advise on skin healing. Tell our team about any previous scarring when you send your photographs.

Who Performs the Surgery at Global Health Hair?

Dr. Merdan Çelik, MD personally performs the incisions, the extraction and the implantation, working with a team of four specialists, and he treats a maximum of three patients a day. He graduated from Trakya University Faculty of Medicine in 1997 and has treated over 20,000 patients. We treat patients with afro-textured hair. Because extraction is the step most affected by curly hair, it is the step to ask about, and the one we describe in writing before you book. See doctor vs technician for why who does the extraction matters.

How Does the Process Work?

You start from home. Send photographs of your hairline, the thinning area and your donor area on WhatsApp, together with a note about your hair type and any history of scarring, and we reply personally. We do not publish a separate price for afro-textured hair; ask for a quote for your case, and see our cost breakdown for how our pricing works in general. The programme in Istanbul is four days and three nights, with a personal consultation, the procedure, a check-up the day after, and follow-up for 12 months by WhatsApp and email. We do not guarantee a specific outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can afro-textured hair be transplanted?

Yes, but extraction needs particular care because curved follicles are easier to cut. A published case series reported high transection rates with conventional rotary punches in tightly curled hair and better results with a curved non-rotary punch; it was small, so ask each clinic how it handles this.

Does Global Health Hair treat afro-textured hair?

Yes. Dr. Merdan Çelik, MD personally performs the incisions, the extraction and the implantation.

What is transection in a hair transplant?

Transection is when a follicle is cut during extraction, which means the graft cannot be used. It is more of a risk with curved follicles.

Should I tell the clinic about scarring?

Yes. Mention any history of raised scars or keloids when you send your photographs, and ask your own doctor for advice on skin healing.

How much does it cost at Global Health Hair?

We do not publish a separate price for afro-textured hair. Send photographs on WhatsApp for a quote for your case.

How can I start without committing?
