Can you verify any of this yourself?
Honestly: not from outside Turkey. The register that holds these numbers sits behind Turkey’s state portal, which requires a Turkish national ID, and Dr. Çelik holds a Turkish licence rather than a GMC registration. We publish the numbers because publishing them is better than not — but we are not going to call them “publicly verifiable” when a reader in the UK cannot check them. Why Does It Matter That Your Turkey Surgeon Has an MD?
Turkey performs more hair transplants than any other country in the world. This volume has created a highly competitive and — in some cases — problematic market structure. Many clinics operating in Istanbul are run as commercial enterprises in which the surgeon’s involvement is limited to signing forms and greeting patients.
The actual procedure — extraction of follicles, channel creation, graft implantation — is performed by trained technicians. These individuals may be skilled, but they are not licensed physicians. They cannot diagnose complications, adapt the plan intra-operatively, or assume clinical responsibility for your outcome.
In Turkey, this practice is common and largely unchecked. Patients who experience poor results — graft loss, unnatural angles, scarring — frequently discover that no physician was present for the majority of their procedure.

Dr. Merdan Çelik graduated from Trakya University Faculty of Medicine in 1997, receiving his MD qualification — the standard Doctor of Medicine degree required for clinical practice in Turkey.
Following qualification, Dr. Çelik dedicated his career to the emerging field of hair restoration surgery, building expertise in both FUE and DHI techniques as they developed from experimental procedures into the gold-standard methods used today. Over more than two decades, he has treated in excess of 20,000 patients from across Europe, the UK, the Middle East, and beyond.
His membership of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) reflects adherence to international clinical and ethical standards and ongoing engagement with the research and development of the field.
