What Is DHI — Direct Hair Implantation?
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is an advanced variation of FUE that uses a specialised instrument called a Choi Implanter Pen. Unlike conventional FUE — where channel creation and graft implantation are two separate steps — DHI combines both actions into a single simultaneous movement.
The Choi pen is a hollow, precision-tipped instrument that holds a single follicular graft. The surgeon places the graft and creates the implantation channel in one controlled motion, minimising the time each follicle spends outside the scalp and increasing the precision of angle, depth, and direction control.

Procedure Day
Procedure under local anaesthesia at the clinic. Duration: 6–9 hours depending on graft count. You return to the hotel the same day. No overnight hospitalisation required.
First Week
Mild redness and small crusts around the implanted grafts. Because existing hair remains in place, the area is far less visible than with a shaved FUE. Most patients are comfortable in public within 3–5 days.
Shock Loss (Normal)
Transplanted hairs enter a resting and shedding phase. This is a standard and expected part of the growth cycle. The follicle remains viable beneath the scalp.

The DHI Procedure — Step by Step
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) skips the channel-opening stage entirely, which is what allows it to achieve higher density without shaving the recipient area. Here is what happens during a DHI session with Dr. Merdan Çelik:
- Hairline design and local anaesthetic. As with FUE, the final hairline is drawn and approved by you before the procedure begins.
- Graft extraction. Follicular units are extracted individually from the donor area and kept in a specialised preservation solution while waiting to be implanted.
- Loading the Choi implanter pen. Each graft is loaded directly into a fine, pen-like device — this is the defining feature of DHI.
- Direct implantation. Dr. Çelik implants each follicle straight into the scalp in a single motion, controlling depth, angle and direction simultaneously — no pre-made incisions are needed.
