What Is FUE Sapphire?
FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction — the technique by which individual hair follicles (grafts) are harvested one at a time from the donor area (typically the back and sides of the scalp) and implanted into the thinning or bald recipient zones.
The “Sapphire” designation refers to the blade used to create the incisions in the recipient area. Conventional FUE uses steel blades; Sapphire FUE uses blades tipped with genuine sapphire crystal. The advantages are clinically meaningful:
- Finer, V-shaped incisions — allowing higher graft density and a more natural-looking result
- Reduced trauma to surrounding tissue — leading to faster healing and less post-operative crusting
- Minimal scarring — the donor area heals to leave only tiny, near-invisible marks
- No linear scar — unlike the older FUT (strip) method, FUE leaves no visible scar at the back of the head
Am I a Good Candidate for FUE?

- You have sufficient donor hair density at the back and sides of the scalp
- Hair loss is in the Norwood Scale stages 2–6

- You have realistic expectations and understand that results develop over 12 months
What to Expect: Your FUE Timeline
Procedure Day
You arrive at the clinic in the morning. Dr. Çelik reviews your hairline design with you. Local anaesthesia is administered. Extraction of follicular units from the donor area takes place, followed by channel opening and graft implantation. The procedure typically takes 6–8 hours. You return to your hotel the same day.
First Week
Minor redness and swelling in the transplanted area are normal. Crusting forms around each graft. Most patients return to desk-based work within 3–5 days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided. Follow the washing protocol included in your aftercare kit.
Shock Loss Phase (Normal)
The transplanted hairs shed. This is entirely expected — the follicles remain active beneath the scalp. Do not be alarmed. The follicle is intact and healthy; it is simply entering a resting phase before new growth begins.
New Growth Begins
Fine new hairs emerge from the transplanted follicles. Growth is uneven at this stage — this is normal. The hairs will thicken and mature over the coming months.
Final Result

The FUE Sapphire Procedure — Step by Step
Understanding exactly what happens on the day helps most patients feel far more confident before travelling to Istanbul. Here is what a typical FUE Sapphire session with Dr. Merdan Çelik looks like:
- Hairline design and local anaesthetic. Dr. Çelik draws and confirms your hairline with you before any numbing begins, so there are no surprises later.
- Graft extraction. Individual follicular units are removed one by one from the donor area (usually the back and sides of the scalp) using a fine micro-punch, leaving tiny, virtually invisible marks.
- Sapphire channel opening. Instead of standard steel blades, sapphire-tipped instruments open the recipient channels — the smoother edge reduces trauma to surrounding tissue, which supports denser packing and faster healing.
- Graft implantation. Each follicle is placed by hand at the correct angle and direction to match your natural hair growth pattern, following the design agreed at the start.
- Post-operative dressing and instructions. A protective dressing is applied and you receive a written aftercare kit before returning to your hotel the same day.
The full session typically takes 6–8 hours depending on the number of grafts required, with short breaks throughout.
