How Many Grafts Do You Need for a Hair Transplant?

Before you can get a fixed price, you need a graft estimate, and the honest answer is that it depends on your degree of hair loss and on your donor area, not on a number you can look up in a table without a photograph. Here is how Dr. Merdan Çelik, MD works it out, the typical ranges by hair loss pattern, how many grafts fit in one session, and what each part of the head usually takes.

Quick summary: Mild hairline recession typically takes 1,500 to 2,000 grafts, moderate crown or frontal thinning 2,000 to 3,500, and advanced loss (Norwood 5 to 6) 3,500 to 5,000. These are ranges, not quotes: the number for your case is confirmed by Dr. Çelik after he has seen your photographs. At Global Health Hair the price is fixed whatever the number of grafts: €1,990 for Sapphire FUE and €2,175 for DHI.

How Many Grafts Do You Need at Each Norwood Stage?

The Norwood Scale measures the pattern and extent of male pattern hair loss from stage 1 (no visible loss) to stage 7 (extensive loss). Typical graft ranges:

Hair loss pattern Typical graft range
Mild hairline recession 1,500 – 2,000 grafts
Moderate crown or frontal thinning 2,000 – 3,500 grafts
Advanced crown and frontal loss (Norwood 5–6) 3,500 – 5,000 grafts

These are ranges, not quotes. Your actual number depends on your donor area, how much of the head you want to cover and how dense you want the result to be, and it is confirmed by Dr. Çelik during your free consultation.

What Is a Graft, and How Is It Different From a Hair?

A graft is a follicular unit: a small group of hairs that grow together from one opening in the scalp. A unit usually holds between one and four hairs, so 3,000 grafts means more than 3,000 hairs. During the procedure Dr. Çelik selects the healthiest units, often those with three or four hairs, using a Trichotest magnifier, because the choice of unit affects both density and how natural the result looks. This is also why two patients with the same number of grafts can end up with different density: the number of hairs per unit, their thickness and the area covered all matter.

How Many Grafts Does Each Area Usually Take?

Hair loss rarely affects the whole head evenly, so the number of grafts is built up area by area. As a published reference, one Dutch clinic states that lowering a hairline usually takes between 1,000 and 1,750 grafts, while the crown usually takes between 1,250 and 2,000, depending on the size of the area. Your own case can sit above or below those ranges.

  • Hairline and temples: the front is designed first, because it frames the face. A conservative, natural line uses fewer grafts than a dense, lowered one.
  • Frontal zone and mid-scalp: density here gives the sense of fullness, and it is usually the largest share of the grafts.
  • Crown: the crown is a wide area with a swirl pattern, and it can take many grafts to look covered. Because loss can continue behind the transplanted area, Dr. Çelik will tell you honestly how far to go.

How Does Dr. Çelik Decide on the Number?

  1. He looks at your photographs. You send photographs of your hairline, crown and donor area, and he gives you an assessment and a graft estimate.
  2. He considers your donor area. Your donor density and the quality of the units available set the ceiling on what can be taken safely.
  3. He designs the hairline with you. At your consultation in Istanbul, before the procedure, you agree the hairline, the areas to cover and the graft number.
  4. He confirms the count before surgery. The number is agreed before the procedure begins, not changed mid-surgery.

The aim is the number your head needs, not the largest number the donor area can give. Taking more grafts than are medically and aesthetically necessary can thin the donor area for good, and it does not improve the result.

How Many Grafts Can Be Done in One Session?

This is where technique matters as much as the stage of hair loss:

  • FUE Sapphire: up to 4,000 to 5,000 grafts safely in a single session.
  • DHI: typically 2,000 to 3,500 grafts per session, because loading and implanting each graft individually with the Choi pen takes longer.

The package price covers up to nine hours of the doctor’s work together with a team of four specialists, which is the time estimated to transfer up to 5,500 grafts. If your case needs more grafts than a single DHI session allows, Dr. Çelik may recommend Sapphire FUE instead, or a staged approach over two sessions. Whether one session is enough is confirmed during your free assessment, before you book. Ethical practitioners do not go beyond the safe extraction limit of the donor area just to fit everything into one visit.

FUE or DHI: Does the Technique Change the Number?

The technique changes how many grafts are practical in one sitting, and whether you need to shave. Sapphire FUE generally requires the area to be shaved and suits larger cases. DHI places each graft with the implanter pen and does not require shaving the whole recipient area, so it is popular for discreet, smaller cases, and it costs €185 more. See the full comparison on our FUE vs DHI page.

Why Doesn’t the Price Change With Graft Count?

Unlike UK clinics, which typically price per graft so that the cost rises with the severity of hair loss, Global Health Hair charges a fixed price: €1,990 for Sapphire FUE and €2,175 for DHI, whether your case needs 1,500 or 5,000 grafts. The price is per operating session, because Dr. Çelik treats a maximum of three patients a day and personally performs the incisions, the extraction and the implantation. Because the price does not depend on the number, the number is decided on medical grounds alone. How Do You Get Your Own Estimate?

Send photographs of your hairline, crown and donor area on WhatsApp, together with your age and how long the hair loss has been progressing. Dr. Çelik reviews them and you receive a graft estimate and a fixed all-inclusive price, with no obligation. At the end of your treatment you receive a signed certificate stating the exact number of grafts implanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I estimate my own graft count from a photo?

A photo gives a rough idea, but an accurate estimate requires assessing donor area density through detailed photographs or a video consultation with Dr. Çelik. Density varies significantly between patients even at the same Norwood stage.

Is 3,000 grafts enough?

For many patients with moderate crown or frontal thinning, 2,000 to 3,500 grafts is the typical range, so 3,000 can be enough. Whether it is enough for you depends on the area you want to cover and the density you expect, which is why the number is set after the doctor has seen your photographs.

What happens if I need more grafts than expected once surgery starts?

The graft count is confirmed and agreed before the procedure begins, during your consultation, and it is not adjusted mid-surgery. This is part of why the price is fixed rather than per graft.

Does a higher graft count mean a better result?

No. The right number for your hair loss pattern matters more than a high one. Over-harvesting the donor area to hit an arbitrary target can compromise long-term donor density.

Do I pay more if I need 4,000 grafts instead of 2,000?

No. The price is €1,990 for Sapphire FUE or €2,175 for DHI whatever the number of grafts, and it includes three nights’ hotel, transfers, medication and 12 months of follow-up. Flights are not included.

How will I know how many grafts I actually received?

You are given a signed certificate stating the exact number of grafts implanted, together with your documents and invoice at your last visit before you fly home.
